Ivory Tower-ism: Bridging the Gap Between Research and Real-World TESOL

Working as a teacher in a faculty in Tripoli, I had a front-row seat to the fascinating—and sometimes frustrating—chasm between academic theory and classroom reality. During my MA studies, I encountered the term ivory towerism, a concept that perfectly captures this disconnect: while research is often conducted in controlled, ideal environments, the reality in the classroom is anything but controlled.

The Research-Teaching Paradox

In academic circles, you carefully select your subjects, design meticulous studies, and identify gaps to fill. But when I stepped into my Tripoli classroom, where lectures stretch for two hours and classes can swell to 40 students, I quickly learned that the real magic happens outside the formal lesson.
The truth? It's not just what I teach—it’s what my students do in their own time that shapes their learning. Most of them are laser-focused on one goal: acing the exam to secure a government job. I eventually made peace with the notion that my role was, at its core, to prepare them for these exams. Yet, I was determined to do more.

Beyond Exam Prep: The Quest for Autonomous Learning

Deep down, I knew that fostering autonomous work and robust learning strategies would truly make a difference. Yet, despite poring over endless research on learner autonomy, I struggled to find a practical guide—a roadmap that could be seamlessly implemented in a real-world classroom setting. How does one teach students not just what to learn, but how to learn?

The Curious Case of Classroom Classism

Another twist in the tale was the subtle classism that emerged in my classes. There were always one or two elite, gifted students—the proverbial "bright sparks"—and then there were the rest, often labeled as low achievers. But if they were truly lazy, why did they strive to improve? Something was clearly amiss. Perhaps these students weren’t lacking motivation—they were simply stuck in a system that did little to nurture their true potential.

The AI Revolution: A Modern Twist

In today’s AI-driven world, one might think that progress would come effortlessly. After all, my students literally have a "professor at home" in the form of AI tools and resources. Yet, even with this digital support, the challenge remains the same: guiding students to use these tools effectively to enhance their learning. Reflections on My Journey

My experience in Tripoli has been a continuous balancing act—navigating the idealism of academic research and the pragmatism demanded by real classrooms. While exams and formal assessments may dictate much of our teaching, it’s our responsibility to empower students with the skills and strategies they need to learn autonomously, think critically, and ultimately, break free from the confines of traditional education.

As we forge ahead in this era of rapid technological change, the challenge—and the opportunity—is to integrate AI into our teaching in ways that truly support student growth. After all, no digital tool can replace the nuanced guidance of a passionate educator.
